This is a very well recognised phenomenon. A few years ago, a study looked at what families understood about the likely outcome of their loveones in ICU. Even when the clinician used an explicit % figure chance of survival, the impression the family had was always significantly more optimistic than the clinician had indicated. Patients and families will always hold on tightly to any sense of hope. | |

This prospective observational cohort study examined the expectations of 1193 pateints with newly diagnosed metastatic lung or colorectal cancer, 4-months after they were diagnosed and had chemotherapy. 69% of those with lung cancer, and 81% of those with colorectal cancer did not know...
