 Another piece of the timing-of-tracheostomy puzzle may be found in this study, which found, at the very least, that mediastinitis is not increased with early tracheostomy.

Interesting to note that there was no increase in the rate of mediastinitis in the early group - this is obviously the most common reason for resistance from our surgical colleagues
