This observational multi-centre study on use of systemic antifungals, from Belgium and France, offers a number of lessons. Firstly it provides a good review of the risk factors and incidence of systemic anti fungal infection in critical illness.

Be careful not to over interpret the results of a cohort study such as this. It is hypothesis generating, and raises some interesting questions, but proves nothing. Also think about the generalisablity of these results from the environment in which the study was performed, to Australasian intensive care practice. Ian Seppelt
