The evidence for this is now getting a bit hard to ignore. I did a review of our practice recently and found around 30% of our transfusions were either not indicated or probably not (Hb 70-100 and no clear reason to transfuse). Given one of the most common reasons we use to transfuse is "high risk cardiac disease", its likely to even higher than 30%. | |

Another interesting paper refuting the claim that blood is good for you, even if you are at risk of heart disease. While not specifically ICU related, this paper adds to the literature on restrictive transfusion practices.
This large trial looked at those at risk...
